Don't treat Sunny Leone as outcast: Justice Katju

Adult TV star Sunny Leone has an unlikely supporter. Press Council chief Justice Markandey Katju has said that Leone should not be treated as a social outcast and her past should not be held against her if her behaviour in India is "socially acceptable''.

Katju said he had not seen anything to suggest that Leone was indulging in pornography. Citing religious examples, he said, "Lord Buddha stayed with the courtesan Amrapali and ate food served by her, and she later became his disciple. Similarly, Mary Magdalene was a fallen woman (according to the Gospel of Luke as interpreted by Pope Gregory) and Jesus allowed her to wash his feet and she later became his disciple."

He added, "My opinion is that Sunny Leone was earning her livelihood in USA in a manner acceptable in that country, though it is not acceptable in India... if she conducts herself in India in a manner which is socially acceptable in India and does not breach the social moral code in India, we should not treat her as a social outcast.''

He was responding to a complaint by Dev Ashish Bhattacharya to I&B minister Ambika Soni and him complaining against inaction by Broadcaster Consumers Complaints Council regarding cross promotion by TV channel Colors of porn actress Sunny Leone.

"There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future," Katju said.

Leone's appearance on 'Bigg Boss' has been a subject of controversy for quite some time. BCCC had recently directed that Leone should not use the show to promote her pornography business. As many as 38 complaints had been made to the BCCC regarding Leone's appearance. However, BCCC has not found anything in the content of Bigg Boss-5 which by itself was violative of self-regulatory guidelines.

Complaints against Colors channel for bringing aboard Sunny Leone

The Broadcast Content Complaints Council (BCCC) received 3,441 complaints in six months since its inception in June last year, with maximum against a Rakhi Sawant hosted programme and appearance of porn star Sunny Leone in reality show 'Bigg Boss'.

The self-regulatory body or TV channels has disposed of a majority of the complaints, officials said.
A sizeable 1,883 were found to be either not relating to the content of the channels or just suggestions.

In such cases complainants are informed that such complaints do not specifically relate to content and the BCCC is unable to consider them.

However, 479 did fall under the category of specific complaints which were heard by the Council and specific action taken.

Among these 36 complaints specifically raised issues related to the appearance of Leone on Colors Channel programme Bigg Boss 5.

Some of the complainants had claimed that children are being exposed to porn industry as they are getting curious to know who is a porn star.

BCCC in its order strongly objected to Leone using her appearance on Bigg Boss-5 as promotional material on her own websites and also advised the channel to choose future participants with care.

The number of complaints related to Leone was second only to the number of complaints received against the telecast of a programme "Gazab Desh ki azab Kahania" which was hosted by Rakhi Sawant on Imagine TV.

The highest number of complaints, 58 were received on the telecast of this show, where the BCCC ruled that the channel should exercise discretion in selecting content for the show.

A majority of the other complainants also objected to depiction of sexuality in television programmes. BCCC took action ranging for advising channels to not telecast programmes during general viewing hours to prohibiting telecast in some cases.

The regulatory body was considering new initiatives like accepting complaints by post, in addition to the prevailing system of email complaints, an idea suggested by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the sources said.

They said that in a meeting held on Friday Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni had appreciated the functioning of the self regulatory mechanism but also expressed some concerns.

"The ministry expressed concern about content of programmes slated to be shown during late hours being re-aired during general hours," an official source said.

BCCC officials said that while they had taken note of the ministry's suggestion.

Amongst other complaints received by the BCCC, 232 were against news channels and in these cases complainants were directed to take up the matter  with the News Broadcasters Association. In 226 cases, advertising related complaints were directed to the Advertisement Standard Council of India.

There were 56 complaints against movies and 41 against channels which do not adhere to the BCCC. These were forwarded to the Central Board of Film Certification and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry respectively.

Another 254 complaints were related to quiz shows being telecast on TV on which an advisory was issued for channels to run a scroll during the programme disclosing information pertaining to call rates or SMS charges which will be applicable for participating in the programme.

Another 270 complaints were classified as Miscellaneous by the BCCC, officials said.

Jism 2's poster revealed

She may not be ready to give out her leading lady's name yet, but Pooja Bhatt is certainly not shying away from letting her audience know what "Jism 2" will be all about. And that's what the first look of the movie screams.

While speculation is rife that Indian-origin pornstar Sunny Leone may be starring in the flick, Pooja says there's still time for her to be giving away that secret.

Pooja told us, "I ain't letting my secret out. There's quite a bit of speculation about Sunny Leone and Bipasha being part of the film, but I haven't finalised the name yet. Hopefully, we'll be able to make an official announcement soon. But we had a positive meeting with Sunny."

And as far as the poster goes, Pooja says that since there was so much speculation, they decided to put a little teaser in place. "However, we must not forget that "Jism" doesn't really depend on the face. It's a brand name that works. It is sensual as opposed to "Murder", which was sexual," she says.

As for the male lead, Pooja says that there is not one, but two male actors she needs, but Rahul Bhatt is not one of them. "I've also heard the story, but Rahul was never supposed to be part of this. There are two leading men with the lady, but since she's the most important, we want to finalise her name first." Pooja adds that she wants to start the movie in the "sizzling summer" of this year so that they can hot up next winter.

Interview with Sunny Leone: No one tries to get fresh with me

After her eviction from 'Bigg Boss', on New Year's Eve, Sunny Leone told DT she's never had to tell a man more than once to lay off, till she met Amar Upadhyay

How did you feel after the eviction?
It was bittersweet. Bitter because I couldn't make it to the finale as a contestant, and sweet because in the New Year, I'm going to be on the outside with friends and family and as part of normal life!

How are you going to bring in the New Year?
In my hotel room, having a nice hot shower, ordering room service, watching today's episode of "Bigg Boss" to see if my friends are crying for me, and having a glass of champagne at 12 o' clock.

So you're on your own?
Yeah, I'm on my own. None of my friends and family could make it because... it's not fair that they couldn't tell anybody till today, and mere friends and family America mein hain!

When you were evicted, did you feel betrayed or angry at someone?
I think that everybody in the house except for my two friends was either mean or didn't want me there or had issues and wasn't being straight to my face. But that's ok. Now that I'm out, I don't have anything to say except I'll call my friends and won't talk to anybody else!

Did you feel a difference in the reactions to you when you told everyone who you were?
I didn't really see a difference. I know that Juhi and Sky were very proud that I said what I said and that made me feel really good. But there wasn't much of a difference in the others. What was being said behind my back, I had no idea, and what they say can't hurt me today. Their opinions are their opinions.

Amar Upadhyay tried to get cozy with you, didn't he?
I tried to handle it in an adult manner, with conversations. I'm not sure he listened to the first one, so I told him again. The first one was when he kissed my hand - I told him you have wife, kids, I respect my husband, I respect him and you should show your family the respect they deserve. We should do our task in a way that's respectful to the whole family.

During the rain dance, I told him not to, but he picked me up. Your first reaction as a woman is... you don't know what to do, how to react. You're scared kyunki you're stuck within four walls with people you've just met. It's a very difficult situation because you don't know what's going to come out of anybody's mouth, and you've watched the show - you know what's said to women and how they talk. It's not nice. You avoid the situation and handle it with as much care as possible, unfortunately.

In your work, have you felt that men assume that you'd be loose or available because you're a porn star?
It's the first time in my entire career that I've had to tell a man more than once not to be a certain way. That's why I didn't exactly know how to handle the situation as it was coming, other than talking to him as an adult. In my real life, no one comes near me or no one even tries to get fresh or do anything - it just doesn't happen. I might work in the adult industry, but where I come from, I get a lot of respect from men. I've worked with different people, different production companies, there are different men on the sets, and never have I felt this way. It happened, he (Amar) said sorry in front of the whole world, he said sorry two more times, and I can only assume he's sincere in his apology. I don't have to see him again, that's a different matter, I guess!

On the whole, since you've been to India and you know some people here - are people here more conservative, or do they have an attitude when they hear 'pornstar'?
I don't think it's an India thing, I think it's an everywhere thing. Whichever country you go to, the US, Europe, you're always going to face these issues where people want to judge and talk to you a certain way because of your background. All you can do is change people's opinions one person at a time.

As for Amar, it doesn't matter where he's from. It's got nothing to do with India. My father's Indian, my grandfather, my great-great grandfather, my brother's Indian. Every man I know is very nice and respectful. Amar didn't come across this way, and I'm sure he's sorry.

Are Indian prudes - that thing about 'we're Indians, we don't talk about sex'?
I think it's a conservative country. I'm not sure it's a 'suppressed' thing. I think that the younger generation is trying to step out of this. It's not about sexuality, it's about how you want to be presented, and being able to do that. It's like, mom and dad, I wanna do what I wanna do, and mom and dad should accept this.

Did you know about the cross-promotion issue, about an Indian organization asking Colors to stop you from using "Bigg Boss" to promote your videos on your site?
I wasn't aware, I don't know all the details, but I do know that if "Bigg Boss" came to my company and my partner to take care of something or to fix the situation, I know that we definitely wouldn't want to tarnish a hopefully ongoing relationship with "Bigg Boss" and all the companies involved. If there was an issue, I know that my company and partner would want to handle the situation correctly so that no one is hurt and it gets fixed.

But surely "Bigg Boss" will get you more fans and customers in India?
No matter what I do, which show I do in this country, my name is always going to be associated with who I am. No one can take that away. No matter what people do, you're always going to come back to who I am. You can't stop that train.

Sunny Lone is willing to leave porn for Bollywood!

Saturday saw Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone being evicted from the reality show, Bigg Boss 5, barely a week before the finale. Though the 30-year-old is unhappy that she could not make it, she’s thrilled about Bollywood prospects now that her TV stint is over.

So much so, that she wouldn’t even mind quitting porn for Bollywood. “I can’t predict the future, but if I get good work in Bollywood and that keeps me busy, why not? I’d love to be part of this industry. I love Bollywood,” says the actor, who is reportedly part of Mahesh Bhatt’s upcoming production, Jism 2.

Ask her about reports that suggest she may also be in show host Salman Khan’s next film and she says: “This is news to me. But it would be great if I get an opportunity to work with Salman.”

Sunny will always remember her time as an inmate in the Bigg Boss house as “interesting.”  “It’s a mad house. I am glad that I found great friends in Juhi and Sky; I had so much fun with them. My stay is something I will never forget throughout my life,” says the former Penthouse Pet.

Quiz her on the controversy that she was using the show as a platform to promote her porn site and she defends, “Nothing was intentional in any way.”

And, she believes there’s no truth to speculation that co-contestant Mahek Chahal was favoured by Salman on the show. “If Mahek was indeed favoured, she would not have been evicted from the house,” she says.

I'm excited about working with Mahesh Bhatt: Sunny Lone

New Delhi: "I am who I am," says Sunny Leone. The Indo-Canadian porn star, the latest to be evicted out of reality show 'Bigg Boss 5', says she did not try and use the platform to promote her "business".

It was reported that the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) cautioned channel Colors to ensure that Leone does not use the show to her advantage, following complaints over her appearance on the show.

But the 30-year-old is nonchalant.

"I don't know what's being going on ever since I am inside the Bigg Boss house. I just know who I am, and the world knows who I am, and what I do...what is my business. My name will always be associated with porn. But there was never any link-up with my website and 'Bigg Boss 5'," Leone told reporters over phone from Mumbai.

People may have known her for different reasons, but Leone, whose real name is Karen Malhotra, gave the Indian audience a glimpse into her other side - the fun-loving girl, who loves to cook and dance.

"This show was so much fun! Thankfully, as you all must have seen, Bigg Boss kept giving me dancing tasks one after the other. So my dancing skills are better, especially some Bollywood moves."

"Also, week by week, my Hindi kept improving, and it is a lot better now. But I was happiest about learning how to cook a variety of Indian food. I made really good dal and learnt how to make potatoes in 10 different ways! I think that's amazing, and I am definitely going to cook an Indian meal once I am back home," she said.

The bisexual girl, who was born to Punjabi parents in Ontario, Canada, caused a flutter when her entry into the show was announced. But she dealt with it quite well. She came with an aim to entertain Indian audiences, and she did that successfully.

Even if she was evicted just a week before the grand finale of the show, Leone says she has no regret because it is all a part of the game. Her bigger victory has been in the form of a movie offer from one of Bollywood's most formidable filmmakers, Mahesh Bhatt, for "Jism 2".

"I am really very excited about working with Mr.Mahesh Bhatt. He has told me a bit about the first instalment of the film, and said how it was very bold, controversial, and of course edgy. So, yes, I am excited about Bollywood," said Leone, who says she wants to stay in India till "Bigg Boss 5" comes to an end.

Among the three men left on the show, she says she made good pals with Akashdeep Saigal aka Sky, and she also found a friend in actress Juhi Parmar.

For the time being, she hopes to enjoy her freedom out of the precincts of the "Bigg Boss 5" house, and watch TV in a hotel room with lots of good food!

Sunny Leone is promoting porn on Bigg Boss! Find out how

Mumbai: The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), an independent body set by the Indian Broadcasters Foundation (IBF) had directed the entertainment channel airing ‘Bigg Boss 5’ to end the indirect promotion of Sunny Leone’s porn site.

The body had asked the channel to withdraw all cross promotional activities that boosted the porn star’s websites by 26th December. And the channel had agreed to comply with the order of BCCC.

Now here’s an insight into how the adult film actress promoted her raunchy websites with the help of the show.

As reported by a daily, Sunny’s website ran messages that read, “‘As seen on ‘Bigg Boss Season 5’, ‘Now watch her strip down and be naughty and see why the world is obsessed with Sunny Leone’.”

The website also ran messages that stated her followers to vote in her favour. These messages that were apparent on the site have now been removed but there are certain eye-catching links in Hindi targeted to attract Hindi speaking surfers. Moreover, the homepage of her site carries an icon of Twitter that reads, ‘How does Voting work this week? If there are no public votes...’.

Prior to Sunny’s entry into the controversial house, very few Indian knew about her. But ever since she started featuring in the show, she has become one of the most Googled celebrities in India. She also became one of the most talked about personalities and even school children as young as 12 years-old were seen searching her on Internet.

Her presence in India has raised a number of eyebrows and scandalized many.

Talking to the daily, the channel’s representative said, “BCCC requested us to use our commercial endeavours to persuade Sunny Leone to not use ‘Bigg Boss 5’ or Colors on her websites, and we assured BCCC of our efforts on the same. In the past, we have persuaded Sunny Leone to not use Colors or ‘Bigg Boss Season 5’ in any form, and now we have decided to write a letter to her informing that in case the references to ‘Bigg Boss 5’ are not removed from her website, we shall immediately terminate her contract and evict her from the ‘Bigg Boss House’.”

Sunny Leone’s ex-boyfriend leaks out their first video online

Mumbai: While Sunny Leone is all set to go for an image makeover of sorts with ‘Jism 2’, her ex has leaked the couple’s adult videos online.

Leone’s former fiancé, Matt Erikson has been cashing in on her first straight porn video. The duo had got engaged in 2007. Before meeting Matt, Leone had only featured in lesbian adult films. Post her engagement, she starred in adult films only with her then fiancé. The couple broke up in 2008. Interestingly, their first movie together was a huge success.

The same movie is doing the rounds on the Internet now.

Matt has, in fact, uploaded some of Sunny’s other films on his website which can only be viewed on rental on pay per view basis. Owing to her sting in ‘Bigg Boss 5’, Sunny’s popularity has increased in India and there is a renewed interest about the porn star’s work and this perhaps Matt is taking advantage of.

Post her break up with Matt, Sunny opened her own production house and did commercial tie-ups with other porn portals. She was also the first porn star to feature in an approved app for a leading smart phone.
