Price of BMW 6-series Gran Coupe is $76,895

BMW of North America on Thursday said that that the six-cylinder version of the 6-series Gran Coupe will carry a sticker price of $76,895, including shipping charges, when it goes on sale this summer. The car gets a world debut at the Geneva motor show in March and will be shown at the New York auto show in April.

The 2013 640i Gran Coupe is powered by turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that will be rated at about 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque.

Later in the year, BMW will add the 650i Gran Coupe powered by a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes about 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. BMW will also offer an xDrive all-wheel-drive version of the 650i Gran Coupe. Prices for those models will be announced later.

The Gran Coupe is a four-door, slightly longer version of the 6-series coupe. Changes from the two-door 6-series include a longer roof structure, shorter front doors, more substantial B-pillars and the addition of front-hinged rear doors. But to maintain a degree of coupelike style, all four doors are frameless.

With a length of 197.1 inches, a width of 74.6 inches and a height of 54.8 inches, the 6-series Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches longer, the same width and just more than an inch higher than the 6-series coupe. Despite its stylistic links to BMW's upmarket two-door models, though, it rides on an altered platform boasting a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase at 116.9 inches--or almost the same as the 5-series sedan.

Inside, BMW has used the Gran Coupe's additional length and height to provide adequate seating for four adults, with the rear seat offering a third three-point belt to allow for up to five occupants--a layout the German carmaker describes as 4+1. Front and rear seats are mounted slightly higher than in the 6-series coupe and convertible, providing for improved visibility. Trunk space is 16.2 cubic feet, 2.1 cubic feet less than in the 5-series sedan.
